Dr. R. Adron Harris is Associate Director of the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research and holds the M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner Chair in Molecular Biology.  Dr. Harris is author or co-author of more than 475 papers on the molecular biology of alcohol and the human nervous system. He is the recipient of the MERIT Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Outstanding Reseacher of the Year Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism, and the Jellinek Memorial Award, an international prize given each year to the scientist who has made the greatest contribution to the understanding of alcoholism as a disease.

Research Summary:
This laboratory is investigating molecular mechanisms responsible for alcoholism and drug dependence. We are defining actions of alcohol and other drugs on brain cells as well as the long-term changes in gene expression responsible for tolerance and dependence. The ion channels controlling neuronal excitability are of particular importance in our studies. Another aspect is the neurochemical basis for genetic differences in drug response. These experiments use genetically modified mice that vary in susceptibility to drug intoxication and dependence. A student working in this laboratory would carry out some of the following studies: (a) effects of drugs on ion channels; (b) site-directed mutagenesis of ion channels; (c) functional and structural studies of brain neurotransmitter receptors; (d) gene expression profiles of humans and mice using microarrays and RNAseq.

Investigators at the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research provide wide-ranging academic approaches to alcohol and addiction research. These research directives include studies of neural plasticity, molecular actions of alcohols and anesthetics, gene expression, and addictive behaviors.
